The Personalization Principle: Conversational Style for the win!
Conversational Style, For The Win!
In the following you are going to be learning about my take on the Personalization Principle by Clark and Mayer. I created a Digital Story Telling Project displaying music theory techniques that I have used over the years to teach film composition to high school seniors in their music theory/Advanced Placement music theory classes. I will also be speaking on the technical challenges on creating a digital story project as well.
I started off the video by telling the audience that I used a musical excerpt from a composition that I wrote twelve years ago. All video and audio are owned through my paid licenses with Noteflight, Screencastify, and NCH Videopad. I then spoke about who the video was meant to help. (High School Music Theory Students, College Music Theory Students, and Adults who have a music background as well.)
On page 187 of the E-Learning and the Science of Instruction, Clark and Mayer speak on the use of personalization through polite speech. In my video I used phrases like, "You may like to use these techniques when writing for short films" because I want the audience to feel comfortable with my suggestions. The Personalization Principle talks about conversational versus the formal style of presenting information. They even go further and cite studies like on page 186 of the E-learning and Science of Instruction that says that there was a 46% improvement on a personalized Narration presentation versus a Formal one.
I also tried to use the Embodiment Principle by putting myself on screen as a coach to promote learning like on page 189 of the E-learning and the Science of Instruction by Clark and Mayer.
I am now going to speak on the technical challenges that I faced in creating my project. Noteflight itself is a internet browser based music composition software that experiences lag from time to time. Also, ScreenCastify did not record the performance audio as well. So, I had to download the full performance track as a Wav file and chop it up multiple times in a video editing software to even try and sync it up with the project. Now, because of the internet lag with the Noteflight audio, my face is not synced up with the final audio from screencastify. However, I did my best in the video editing sofware to line up the visuals with the cursor and the on screen music. Moving foward I will try to figure out an Offline way to do this to not encounter so much lag!
